Lecture Synopsis: A decade ago, data journalism was an emerging discipline. It is now a core part of most major news organisations. Far from replacing the traditional craft skills of gathering information through personal testimony, data is creating a new place for intuition and anecdote as diagnostic tools for data investigations. It is driving more collaborative models as reporters work alongside statisticians and designers to interpret and visualise information. Data can help surface issues hidden in plain sight, and empower the public with information describing their locality. The increasing use of data has also been a cultural challenge for newsrooms still largely staffed by humanities graduates. And a new space has been created for conversations between journalists’ topical instincts and the longer term perspective of academic inquiry.
